On July 4th, through the sponsorship of Angel Water Inc. located in Barrington, IL, we donated to the Pothanegama School an industrial RO water filter. This is literally a life-saving device that will serve many people for many years to come.
The school, which is located in a village near Anuradhapura was chosen for several reasons. First, in lowland areas where a great deal of farming takes place, runoff of pesticides and fertilizers easily get into the water table which people will ultimately drink. The purification processes in our developing nation don’t clean the water completely. This issue coupled with a high mineral content in the water creates kidney and other health issues for many people in these areas.
The school was also chosen because it will be providing daily drinking water to a large student body. Children are our future, and they are also our most vulnerable population. Just like protecting mothers, I have the determination to support our children, and they should feel safe doing something as normal as drinking water. This location also has the advantage of being centrally located to neighboring villages, where families can come and collect drinking water to bring home each day.
In low-income areas such as these, families cannot afford the luxury of water filters, and many of the common filters are not sophisticated enough to truly purify the water. As the founder of Angel Water Inc., Andrew Wilson says, “Water is life.” By providing pure and safe drinking water, these children and villagers can have a new found hope and safety for their futures. Even the Buddha taught, that prevention is better than the cure, and through this noble effort, Angel Water has put their love into action.
I want to thank Andrew Wilson, Angel Water Inc., the team at Sanatha Suwaya, and all those involved in this and all other great works happening around the world to make it a better and safer place for the future.
