Thanks to his efforts, Bhante Sujatha is contacted by individuals seeking assistance nearly everyday. As much as any of us would like to, we realize that we can’t help everyone to the extent that we would like. But, we focus, work hard, and do what we can with what we are given.
For each of the stories we hear, we try to find where we can be effective, and in 2013 a case, was brought to Bhante Sujatha’s attention by Bhante Sumana, his brother monk at The Blue Lotus Buddhist Temple in Illinois.
Bhante Sumana’s home town of Kanthalai, Sri Lanka, is in a dry zone. A family of four there owns land that is on a flood plain. Their house is flooded literally every year and deteriorates quickly because it is made from unsustainable materials. Because Kanthalai is a small village, the community has learned to work together to support each other. Bhante Sumana saw that this family in need could benefit a great deal with a modest amount of money and support from a willing community. What they need is a house built on a solid foundation. By building a house on a proper foundation, they can create a raised floor and support a from stone and brick structure that can maintain safe electricity, protection from animals, and provide some comfort and relief for this struggling family.
Bhante Sujatha agreed with Bhante Sumana and quickly some start up funds were raised to get the project going. With the help of friends in the community, the project is underway, but moving slowly as funds go to work when they come in. The pictures on this page come show a timeline from then end of 2013 to today. As you can see, only a small portion of the house is actually on a foundation.
It doesn’t take much money to make a house like we are building for them, and while it isn’t totally complete yet, we hope to see this house finished by the end of April. If you would like to contribute or learn more, please click the “Get Involved” button below.
